Then I forgot about this thread for a few days.

If I remember correctly, there's a thin connection, but it's even thinner
than you might think.  Newer's premise with those clock pin ID switches was
valid, but their misunderstanding of the bus speed bit undermined their
intent.  The upshot is that some switch settings (can't recall which, but
it's in the KnowledgeBase, which I really need to finish editing) make the
situation better or worse, but none is an absolute fix.  If they'd
understood the bus speed bit correctly, more (all?) of those switch settings
would have worked (bearing the S900's bus speed pickiness in mind...).

Having lunch with my best ex-Umax/now-Apple buddy tomorrow, who may remember
a few more details....
