My opinion is that if she would want to upgrade many sub-systems then
it makes sense to get a newer machine instead. Not necessarily a
brand new machine, but there are some more recent machines on the
used market, probably for less than upgrades to the old machine would
cost.

But there are always exceptions. For example, why does she want to
upgrade at all? Is the machine still doing what she needs it to do?
Perhaps, continuing to use the machine as is, is an option. Also,
if she's familiar with this machine and doesn't want to learn her way
around the hardware of a new machine, there's a benefit to keeping
what she's familiar with. Finally, one advantage of upgrading is
that one can spend a little money at a time and not have to make a
larger outlay all at once. If that fits her financial situation,
upgrading may still be a better option.

A speed demon type computer user would want to upgrade the memory,
hard drive system, CPU and video card in that machine. All those
things taken together would add up to at least the cost of a used
machine of a more recent generation which would come with a faster
CPU, faster video and a faster hard drive system. A more recent
machine might still need memory added, but at $30 per 256 MB SDRAM
DIMMs (newer machines use cheaper memor than the S900) that isn't
much of an issue.

But if she doesn't want to upgrade all those sub-systems, it could be
cheaper and more sensible to stick with her current machine and just
upgrade one or two sub-systems.

So it really boils down to a question of what her goal is.
