no the cpu will not kill the hard drive. you need the extension in , incase the fan on the cpu stops ( like mine did once, blocked with dust)
i have the same xlr8 and about 1 g of ram I have problems with the segate drives, some just die. however some things to check. 1. ensure the drive is not getting too hot, ( it's a high speed drive and the fan in the s900 is not enough) i have added an extra fan into my s900 at the bottom front. 2. when did you install it?, if over a year, check that dust has not gotten onto the electronics. ( yes i know it is sealed, but you get dust, then when the weather changes the humidity makes the dust damp, and that can screw up the disc drive electronics) 3. don't bang/bump you computer with hi speed drives. anyway you can fix the problem, using FWB tools 4.5. there is an option to automatically re-allocate bad blocks, turn it on then re-format the drive ( low level) > From: Paul Shand <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>(SuperMacs List) > Date: Fri, 24 Jan 2003 12:06:01 +1000 > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>(SuperMacs List) > Subject: [SM] ST34555N, Seagate Hard Drive Finally Gave Up the Ghost > > Hi I sent this but might have mis-addressed it.
