Can anyone offer some advice? I am planning on upgrading my C600 (200MHz) with additional memory (currently at 48MB), and adding a video card. I might also consider a USB/Firewire PCI Card - already have a 10/100 Ethernet PCI card installed.
What do you recommend as a source for memory? I remember that when I added in the 32MB (to give me 48MB total), I had problems. The memory DIMM I bought would not work at all in one of the slots, and I had to get a replacement DIMM because the first one I received only worked intermittently. I do not remember if it is an FPM or an EDO DIMM, but I suspect that might be a part of the problem I encountered. I read the recent postings about Video Cards, and it seems the recommendation is an ATI Rage 128MB. What is the best source to buy one of these? Ebay? What is reasonable for the going price? Once an additional video card is installed, what happens with the on-board video? In other words, I only want/need one monitor. Is there any problem or configuration issue to get everything displayed via the add-in video card (bootup screens, menu bar, etc.)? Can the on-board video be disabled? I am running OS8.6, so I don't believe I will have any problems if I want to add a USB/Firewire card. Are there any "gotchas" that I should be aware of? Again, any recommendations on brand or source? Is there anything else that I should be considering when upgrading this machine? My desire is to get a few more years good usage out of it, and maybe at some point to upgrade to OS9. Any suggestions will be welcomed. This list is GREAT! I want to publicly thank David (DWass) and George (George Abe) for significant help they have given in the past. The support here is unmatched.
