Sure, but as I understood it the printer must first announce itself over the
network before it can have a PPD associated with it.
Correct.  The LaserWriter extension should see any Postscript printer 
on the network regardless of PPD.  All the PPD does is inform the 
print driver of options such as paper trays and such.  It is not 
required for printer recognition, nor even for printing.
