Well, I'm glad someone else is also exploring this option. Good to hear
about the CarrierZIF compatibility, they come on eBay much more often and
always for a lot less. It's a shame about the Mach Velocity. If it truly
was a case of Apple messing with the processor architecture, I was going to
suggest trying to build Darwin for old school MP and swap out the kernels
(probably wouldn't be that simple but who know?)

You probably guessed already that the overclock-included warranty and
overclock-favorable nature of the 750FX (multipliers up to 20x,
software-controlled multiplier) are what brought me to the PowerLogix G3 ZIF
900. At stock bus speed, I could theoretically OC that 900MHz ZIF to 1GHz,
and if I can cool the motherboard properly and obtain high quality RAM and
PCI peripherals, I should be able to push the bus speed as well (allowing
higher core clocks). According to xlr8yourmac, there's an undocumented
66MHz DIP setting on the CarrierZIF, but I doubt I could get it stable.
Still, no harm in trying.

I'm not particularly concerned about connectors on the fan, since the S900
has at least one 3-pin fan header and even if it didn't and I didn't already
have the adapter (I do), I still have a soldering iron and wire strippers
;-). What concerns me is actually attaching the HSF onto the ZIF socket,
since I have no idea what dimension the socket is. If it's the same
physical dimensions as a Socket5/7/370/A, I'd just clip the sucker on. If
not, I'm going to have to modify something, whether it's as simple as just
using the spring clip provided with either the ZIF or the CarrierZIF or
sawing off pieces of HSF, or worst case having to thermal epoxy the thing
down. Luckily case cooling won't be a problem: I've migrated my S900 to a
big black Chieftec Dragon series full tower ($50 shipped, great case). I
have a slight issue which prevents me from using the topmost 3.5" drive bay
in my second 3.5: drive cage due to the processor card being in the way, but
since I have 4 other available 3.5" bays after installing the floppy drive,
that isn't a big concern.
