Well, I'm glad someone else is also exploring this option. Good to hear
about the CarrierZIF compatibility, they come on eBay much more often and
always for a lot less. It's a shame about the Mach Velocity. If it truly
was a case of Apple messing with the processor architecture, I was going to
suggest trying to build Darwin for old school MP and swap out the kernels
(probably wouldn't be that simple but who know?)
You probably guessed already that the overclock-included warranty and
overclock-favorable nature of the 750FX (multipliers up to 20x,
software-controlled multiplier) are what brought me to the PowerLogix G3 ZIF
900. At stock bus speed, I could theoretically OC that 900MHz ZIF to 1GHz,
and if I can cool the motherboard properly and obtain high quality RAM and
PCI peripherals, I should be able to push the bus speed as well (allowing
higher core clocks). According to xlr8yourmac, there's an undocumented
66MHz DIP setting on the CarrierZIF, but I doubt I could get it stable.
Still, no harm in trying.
The last version of the dip set chart documents Carrier card settings up to and including 66 MHz! It also includes settings of 66.6 and 100MHz marks them for use with Beige G3 and B&W machines! I'm guessing it might be possible to leave the Zif dips at off and use the Carrier card for setting bus speed. It will take working with the Zif card to see what will work best.
The heat sink on the carrier card seems fine for me no over heating and Daystar Digital sells a heavy duty finned heat sink for it for $15.00 . Not sure why you are so set on making a PC heat sink fit it? I say first try a fan on it if needed before doing all that work that may not be needed. Mike @ xlr8yourmac.com reviewed the Powerlogix G3 800 Zif in an early B&W machine. It ran fine at 800 & 850 MHz but would freeze after about 20 min when set to 900 MHz. He did say a fan might fix that but didn't have time to try it. Almost no info on the G3 900 so far. I did read it runs hot in a couple of places. It is very unlikely your S900/j700 would run at 66 MHz bus . Many people have tested these over the years and most people find as I have that 61 MHz seems to be the limit without freezes etc. However it might be possible to get a bit more with a fast cpu and fans and big heat sinks. However that would be sure to stress motherboard chips and the RAM chips!
Best of luck and it will fun to hear how this goes! Will S
