One step back and then two steps back. . .

My J-700 was working perfectly 2 or 3 days ago, but in the process of trying to get either the CD-ROM &/or the original HD up and going, I blew it. Now I can't get the damn thing to boot at all, except with a floppy disk (OS 7.5.3). I get an error message on the HD boot up stating, to the effect, "This start-up disk won't work with this computer. Use the latest updates, etc, etc, etc." I've re-installed the OS several times on my HD in the last 24 hours, plus I get this same message even on the rare occasion that I can get it to (almost) boot from a CD. What gives? Have I fried my SCSI controller? Even when I boot from the floppy, the screen is different. When I open the mounted drive folders, I no longer see the actual contents, but, rather a "Where Have All My Files Gone" doc. Do I need to pursue that S-900 motherboard from Bruce? (Hey, Bruce, I know what you mean by flooding. I live in Houston and we just got clobbered on Monday).

I just bought a used CD-ROM today from a Apple repair place today. He claims that it came out of an Apple (he thinks. . .), but there is no Apple logo on it anywhere. It's a NEC CDR 3010A, if that means anything to anybody (apparently manufactured about three years ago). I went to the NEC website and it just states that it's an OEM drive that they make for someone else, and we should contact the "someone else" for info. Unfortunately, I don't know who the "someone else" is. If it's Apple, they're not divulging any info. BTW the original CD-ROM was a Matsushita-Kotobuki CR508-B. I think it's dead. It spins but I can't seem to get anything else out of it.

What you're saying about the USB/FW card makes perfect sense. I just had to jump through some hoops at the house on my son's PM 5500 last night when I installed a Sonnet Tango card. I bet the same technique will work with this Powerlogix, too. Thanks!

To: Will & Tom:
Ditto on the 10/100 card. This bears out my experience with the PM 5500. The 10 Base card works just as fast as the 10/100 card on the iMac. Sounds like I don't really need the Asante 10/100 card. No big deal, I have less than $15 invested in it and can just put it up on the swap list

To: David:
I installed 128 meg of RAM from OWC in my C-500 last December and it works great! They're probably going to be your best bet for RAM. (Decent prices, too!)

I will anxiously await any words of wisdom you guys may have to offer.
