Jeff G. spoke of the "emphasis on cutting the number of them [old computers]
that end up in landfills."

I understand that's not a great idea, but what in fact are we to do with
them? I have one (and soon two) that will need to go somewhere.
Find a couple of little people who need a computer. Last year Ron and I fixed up three LC575s for some preschoolers (4 & 5 year olds).
I "think" os 7.6 is freely distributed now. And, there is a wealth of freeware for children on www.kidsdomain.com
If you fix up a computer for a little person, you have to get to know the Launcher... most preschoolers can not read yet. (I always knew the Launcher had to be good for something)

Nancy, Great idea!
Really no computer or electronic item should go in the landfill. Different parts of the country are different . But now days if you live near a city there should be recyclers. There is money to be made on recycling the metal and other parts.I am lucky enough to live where there are two good choices. One place takes any computer and takes them apart and makes usable machines from the parts. The unusable metal is sold as scrape metal. Anyone can come and work helping sort the computers etc. After reaching a total of I think 8 hours they get a free machine in exchange. If a PC it will be setup with Linux and Macs with the older i think 7.5.3 . It's a great way for kids and low income people to get a machine working machine.
The Germans have the right idea in my opinion. Everything sold in Germany at end of life has to be taken back by the company which made it and recycled. This includes even BMW's, VW etc pretty much everything. Even boxes and packing are returned to the store where you bought the item. It sounds like a nightmare but everyone is doing it because it's the law. Things get setup in ways to make things easier then areas with no way of handling things.
I really like the idea of special shipping rates for used computers. We already have cheap shipping for books by the Post office. So it could be like that. It will be hard to get it started but well worth doing. Will S
