my 2 cents
My friend who makes a living selling Mac stuff On Ebay has had to cut
back to G3 and newer because the older 680x0 and 60x machines don't
bring any profit. He even has trouble moving Gx upgraded 60x units.
Maybe with the upturn in economy that's occurring things might change.
He tries not to mess with monitors and printers due to weight.
Lately i have been taking the stuff he can't move to my place. I am
slowly going through and parting out all the larger case units,
especially 680x0. Right now i don't have to many q950 but they make a
good monitor/printer shelf supports. i suppose that i could set them up
as a file/printer servers. But with over 100 computers (thankfully i
only have 40 +/- monitors (not counting 40 radius and supermac dead
monitors outside that i am trying to dispose of)). Since everything
needs to be tested before tear down and labeled it can be time
consuming. I just spent 3 weekends checking HD, ram, floppy and power
supplies for some IIsi's. I have to do them the hard way because i was
trying to get them inside, so i pulled parts from cases. Now i'll have
to test speakers, fans, motherboards. New rule !!test before tear down!!
lesson learned. The difference in storage space is worth it. I will
probably do those large c/q650/pm7100 style cases next. I can only
afford to keep a few units running Seti since electricity cost dollars
and disability does not go far. Now that I've found the low end mac swap
site, i'll start putting the parts and units up to get them out of the way.
the point is there are not enough of us die hard Mac fans to keep every
model made in a collection, at some point they have to go somewhere for
disposal. I have been looking for a company that buys (not me pay them)
scrap computer parts in small quantities. Most of the ones you find want
truck or triwall (gaylord) loads, or you pay to ship to them as a give
away. So where are they going? The dump of course. The metal i can
recycle, with no problem, it is the plastic and monitors that are a
problem. Excuse the ranting, but it is another way to look at disposal.
