After replacing PPP Connect...can't open any e-mails in my in-box other than
ones I received
tonight...

Well thanks everyone for your suggestions. I tried holding down the option
key while opening Outlook Express but it didn't make any difference. The
program opened as it always does without asking me if it should compact
anything. I tried importing the messages from my inbox in the old Outlook
into a newer version but it only brought in the few recent ones that I can
open. I used Norton Unerase to try and resurrect the original version of PPP
Connect that I unknowingly trashed without saving a copy but no such file
was found. I guess there is nothing else I can try that might help me be
able to open those saved emails (160 of them)? I think they were stored on
my drive and not on a server. If they were on a server I wouldn't be able to
open them while I wasn't logged on whould I? If no more suggestions come in,
thanks anyway to those who offered help.
