Anyone have suggestions as to what OS X would have done to the hard drive to

I had to format my external firewire HD with Hard Disk Speed Tools, which came
with the drive.
A full version of HDST came with the drive.
Reason given was Apple's Drive Setup would not recognize and format external
firewire drives in legacy macs.
This is for a S900 running 9.1.

Would it be possible when you took the drive to work another driver from X took
over and changed it, causing some minor incompatibilities at home as a result ?

This is just a guess.

When you partition/format a drive under OS X, Disk Utility requires that you specifically choose to install drivers that will also allow the drive to be accessed under OS 9. Perhaps that was not installed?
