Bill,

If you re-read Paul C's suggestion, this is not a bad way to go about it:
resave the message as a text file, which can then be opened, read, and
edited in a text processor such as SimpleText, TextEdit, BBEdit, Alpha, etc.
You then have the option of deleting the original message from the
archive/database of Communicator, Outlook, Eudora, etc., or not. The reason
you might not want to delete is that some of that "extraneous" data makes it
possible to organize the messages by topic, thread, keywords, recipients,
authors, etc., making it much easier to retrieve on demand.

With Jaguar and beyond, a number of interesting options open up for text
manipulation, formatting, and printing, particularly via the X11 emulation.
In addition to a number of text utilitites--vi, emacs, pico, awk, sed, grep,
etc.--that are now available from BSD, there are several open source word
processors such as OpenOffice.org, LyX, and AbiWord. The first two are
full-blown document suites, or MSW replacements, the latter is evolving as a
more focused word processor with some very interesting developments with its
plug-in architecture that allows for translation and editing across quite a
number of document formats. For more advanced page layout and printing
options, there is the UNIX "method," using a range of TeX packages
available, such as LateX, SeTeX, etc. I'm not so sure that simplifies what
you are trying to accomplish, though ;)

Peace,

paul
