Just to the left of the power supply is a swing-out cage meant for
another fan, and the case cover has vents for it, but I cannot find a
suitable socket for feeding this fan though.

That "swing out cage" is really designed for additional hard drives. It is referred to in the Users Manual as drive bay 6 and 7. Drives 1 though 5 being the ones on the front face of the box.

Indeed this swing-out cage can accommodate two half-height 50-pin SCSI hard
drives, with SCSI connectors available, supplying power to them would need
to be jury-rigged somehow. Whichever way, at the very end (left-most side)
of this structure is indeed a fan grill with holes for a 80mm fan, so it
should really be meant for ventilating the hard drives mounted there I
presume.

There are conveniently located power connectors for drives in those two bays. We have a second hard drive (a SCSI drive) in our C600 located there. Do a little checking. The power cords are usually neatly tucked inside an empty drive bay under the CD drive.

snip...

My line of thinking is more like this: if the original fan is for pulling
air out of the enclosure from the back, it means the enclosure is made to
have air vents for the ingress of cool air which flows over the hot
components, effecting ventilation. If an additional fan is put there to pull
out air as well, it means that the rate of ingress of cool air will be
increased, thus increasing cooling; but if the additional fan pushes air in,
the ingress of air from the vents would decrease, which probably would
diminish the rate of cooling. Any thoughts on that?

I am clueless on the details of the case design and its venting. Maybe someone like Kennedy can comment here...
