Not 100% clear on the question because of the technical terms, but all I did was plop in a Sonnet Tempo (ATA 66 back then) and connected a drive to it.
Plug and play under OS 9.1.
Drive showed up on the desktop and I went ahead and reformatted it.
If you get a drive that isn't Mac ready, then it can be found using something like HDST and initialzied/formatted.
This would be for a s900.
