Both responses were about the Sonnet cards which were specifically marketed to Mac people. Take a look at this page:

There's a few cheap cards there for 25 bucks or so. What I want to know is if those cards will work in a Mac, especially a S900 for OS X.

To answer your question. No, PC versions of the ATA PCI cards will not work on any Mac. Yes you are paying a premium for the Mac Firmware just like with Video cards. Switching a PC ATA card to Mac requires a larger Firmware chip . The old chip would have to be removed and a new larger one soldered on. It would then need to either be programed with the correct firmware or in some cases in maybe possible to flash the firmware. Unless you already have the needed tools, knowhow and firmware it is unlikely to be cost effective for 1 card.
Wish I had better news. There are clearly some costs involved with developing firmware for the Mac. It does seem the premium added is steep to me. Will S
