I know the Sonnet card does have the "first 8 GB" partition limit in OSX.
However, if I can get both my DVD-R and hard drive to be seen in OSX, yet
can only get one drive at a time to be recognized in OS9, it does seem to
lead to an OS software limitation. I tried all combinations of Master/Slave
- hard drive/DVD-R. My workaround has been to put the DVD recorder in an
external Firewire case so I can use it in both OS9/OSX. Would love to be
able to find an internal ATA solution that would work with both operating
systems.
Is anyone else on the list using a third-party IDE/ATA card, and are you
able to get two drives working with it in OS9?

I've not seen nor heard of a Mac ide/ATA card that won't let you hook up and run 1-4 devices. The Sonnet 133 is a big seller and works fine for most people. So it is most likely that things are not setup correctly or perhaps your card is deffective. Things to check. Second hard drive defective or jumper pins not set correctly. Most hard drives will have a choice between Master, slave, cable select and some like the the Western digital have a master single setting for when it is the only drive on the cable. Wrong setting and it may not work. 66 ATA drives and faster require ide cables like the one which should have come with the ata card. It has 80 wires for 40 pins and the wires are very small in the cable . Older style ide cables are 40 wire and the wires are thicker and the cable thicker. They don't work well with newer faster drives. Since the ata cards only come with one cable at most you likely had to buy a second cable for the second channel. DVD RW drives usually require master setting to work well for burning so the hard drive on that channel would need to be set to slave or maybe cable select( cable select seems to work with some hard drives and not others in my Umax). Firmware or software update would be available at the sonnet web site. I doubt that is the issue. Hope some of this helps best of luck. Will S
