The 133 card uses a different chipset than the Acard/Sonnet ATA 66(which is seen as a SCSI device). The older card runs multiple drives with no problem. The fact your card works in OSX still leads me to think it is a software driver issue. Find out who really made your card and see what software updates they have available. Paul C

Unfortunately, your Tempo 133 card in a S900 is a different issue. Will
was addressing the built in IDE(motherboard) of the C series Supermacs
and Legacy Macs. You may have solved things going to OSX, but that may
not have been the actual conflict of problem. Paul C

Umax wasn't alone with the IDE controller one channel issue. The
Apple machines with IDE of that era had the same issues. This included
the 630 series 68K machines among others. It even includes the Beige G3
series version 1 and 2. The third and final version of the Beige G3
fixed this issue. Ready for a bit more trivia? It turns out it wasn't
really the cheap IDE controllers used by Apple and Umax. It is Mac OS
8 and 9 that limits the IDE to one channel. Any of these machines when
made to run OSX will work with 2 channel IDE! Boot into OS 9 and the
second drive disappears. Granted I only know one person running OSX on
a Umax c machine. However a number of Beige G3 series 1 and 2 owners
take advantage of being able to add that second drive for OSX use
without needing a PCI ATA/ide card. later Will S

From what I read in Will's post, the "one channel" limitation seems to be
one of software (ie OS9 vs OSX), not hardware. Do you have any other info
regarding the Sonnet Tempo 133 that would lead you to believe my problem was
hardware related (ie one having one drive working off the ATA controller in
OS9)?

I know the Sonnet card does have the "first 8 GB" partition limit in OSX.
However, if I can get both my DVD-R and hard drive to be seen in OSX, yet
can only get one drive at a time to be recognized in OS9, it does seem to
lead to an OS software limitation. I tried all combinations of Master/Slave
- hard drive/DVD-R. My workaround has been to put the DVD recorder in an
external Firewire case so I can use it in both OS9/OSX. Would love to be
able to find an internal ATA solution that would work with both operating
systems.

Is anyone else on the list using a third-party IDE/ATA card, and are you
able to get two drives working with it in OS9?
