Well, I guess I'm really behind the curve.
But I finally convinced 9.1 to boot.  What had got me on the wrong track was
the alert I would receive: "This startup disk will not work on this
Macintosh model. Use the latest Installer to update this disk for this
model."

So I was concentrating on the disk formatting when the problem turned out to
be the Sonnet Processor Enabler software that I needed to reinstall
correctly.  I was just copying the various items from my 8.6 folder to 9.1
but apparently something deeper gets installed that is essential to
operation.  Mystery solved. Now I can begin to enjoy my circa 2000 operating
system.

I agree, it's been a great, long lasting computer with few problems for me.
(the fan noise is a bit loud)
(I can't boot from the CDrom drive...don't know why; never could)
