The clicks on/clicks off is likely an issue with your ATI R7000 card. At least, that is the only circumstance in which I've seen that particular behaviour. It could have another cause, of course.


I found two solutions. One was to revert to the 1.19 firmware for the R7000 card. The other was to run the video through a VGA to Mac adapter and then through a Mac to VGA adapter. I think that all that does is filter the monitor reporting signals off of the cable.

Versions of the R7000 firmware after 1.19 (2.08 and later) added a system called DDC (Display Data Channel) in which the monitor reports it's specs to the video card (similar in purpose to but different in implementation from Apple's sense lines). Some older monitors must send some funky DDC data by accident (the monitor most likely doesn't even support DDC) and this causes the weird behaviour from the R7000.
