I too have had the same problems. I have narrowed it
to PRAM and system disk CD. Usually the CD works but
if not, then I zap the PRAM and the system will start
up from the system CD. After the machine boots, run an
app or 2 to make sure you main drive is mounted and
working. Then open the startup disk control panel and
set the startup disk to your main drive.
