Thanks for the info Jeff,

just to add some more data for any others with the
same thing, I have a Sony 17" hooked to the VGA
connector and a no-name 15" hooked to the DVI
connector through an adapter.

the next time i lose the screen, i'll keep track of
what i do. perhaps it was just reconnecting the VGA
ports.
