So someone might reasonably want to be able to view the two very
different types of content (plain text and html) with two very
different kinds of displays.

That's what the OP would like to be able to do, and if anybody can
head back up the thread to help with it, that would be great;
unfortunately, I don't know how to set either SM or Thunderbird to do
it.
