Verizon does not have news groups.
mozilla is limited to mozilla subjects (mostly)
microsoft is limited to MS subjects (mostly)
There are over 100,000 news groups but your
news service has to carry those groups.
If you want to participate, you will have to
find free or open news servers
or pay for news server access.
