What we actually did remove was the mere base64 "obscuring" of passwords, which older versions did by default.

Yes - that was the answer that I received when I initially asked about it. But it would be - and still is - a good idea to provide the information as to what is actually being done in the user dialog (like the previous "use encrypting vice obscuring" note/option) to make it clear just what is happening. Particularly in the initial release of such a notable change. Then I wouldn't have had to ask at all.
