And I need it back NOW!!!

Writing from my laptop, which does not seem to be afflicted.

Scenario:

Running SM 2.3.3 normally on my desktop machine for a week or so, launched and terminated many times without incident. OS = WinXP SP3, fully patched. At 11 PM, shut the program down in anticipation of scheduled backup at midnight. Unlike my usual practice, did not monitor Windows Task Manager to be sure SM actually did terminate.

Returned at 3 AM after backup and launched SM, which prompted me to set up an account -- as if it had no idea that I already had an existing profile with thousands of messages, passwords, bookmarks, etc. etc.

Refused to create an account, OKed out, and shut the program down. Windows Task Manager showed that before shutting down, the program spawned nine instances of the plugin container, plus Acrobat.exe, before eventually shutting down all the plugin containers and itself, leaving Acrobat.exe.

Profile manager lists one profile, called "default," and the box asking whether to prompt on launch is checked ("Do not ask..."). Launching the program from here has the same result -- I have to set up an account in order to receive mail.

What do I do??? I'm desperate, I don't recall the answer that was given already on this forum, and there's no easy way to search the forum for keywords.
