P.P.S. Bookmarks, history, permissions, etc. in Data Manager
all seem to be intact. Even SMTP servers are intact. Only mail
and newsgroup accounts have vanished.
Do you have News and Mail folders in your profile?
Nope, not unless I run the Create Account wizard. It starts with a blank
window and immediately asks me to make a new account.
Oh darn! So no profile backup in your scheduled backups to restore from?
Can you do a search of your system and see if they got moved somewhere?
As I said in my original post, all my accounts are exactly where I left
them, but SM pretends not to see them. In Windows Explorer, I can
navigate through my profile to the various mail folders and subfolders,
and they're all where I expect to see them.
As for the scheduled backup, it captured everything, including whatever
bit was flipped to make it do this. I tried renaming the \Mozilla folder
to \Broken Mozilla and restoring \Mozilla from last night's backup, but
it was no help. I also tried the same strategy with the previous night's
backup, but no joy. So I deleted the restored versions with
less-than-current mail folders and unrenamed \Broken Mozilla back to
\Mozilla, leaving me right where I started.
One very peculiar thing about all this is the P.P.S. you quote above --
it's not the whole profile that's missing, just the mail and news
accounts. Passwords are still there, history is still there, permissions
are still there, bookmarks are still there, and they're all in that
\Mozilla folder. But it just can't see my mail and news accounts.
OK, I'm confused again.
I asked if your Mail and News folders where in your profile and I
believe you responded "Nope", now you say they are there.
Sorry, I don't run Windows, and don't believe I can be of any further
assistance.
Maybe this will help.

I will suggest using MozBackup in the future.
