If the entry is missing, then there is no relevant line in the
configuration files -- and therefore, the code can NOT use anything BUT
the default value.

But I get what you are saying: if the entry does not exist, how can you
tell if it's using the DESIRED value (which is not necessarily the same
as the default value)? That's a problem indeed.
