That's probably because SM has the good sense to compose in plain text for newsgroups and HTML elsewhere.

Under Edit | Preferences | Appearance | Fonts, the font listed under "Monospace" is used for plain text, and the ones listed under "Proportional," "Serif," "Sans-Serif," "Cursive," and "Fantasy" are used for HTML.
