Hi Ileen-

Oops...I forgot the final steps.  The new column you have created is a calculation based on the one with all caps.  When you delete the all caps column, the new column loses its reference (#REF) for the calculation.  Here is the solution.

With the ALL CAPS column and the lower case column still there:
1) Create another new column.
2) Highlight the lower case column and hit "copy"
3) Highlight the new empty column, and go to Edit ---> Special Paste
4) Click on "Values"
5) Now you can (and should) delete the ALL CAPS column and the lower case calculated column.

Thanks for the compliments on my instructions.  After two years training and troubleshooting folks in the field (via phone and email) on computers, I have learned to be 100% explicit in my computer instructions -- to the point of insulting people's intelligence occasionally!

Thanks for your help Amy.  Your directions were explicit step-by-step -- exactly what a computer neophyte like me needs.

One last question/problem -- I followed your instructions below and was able to make the conversion to initial caps on the names in a new column, however, when I deleted the original column with the all caps names, the new column with the first letter only capital names converted to the following message in each field: #REF!   and all my newly created names with only the first letter capitalized were gone.

How do I keep them?

There is a way to convert upper case to lower case in Excel (never underestimate the powers of Excel!).

Here are the steps:

1) create a new column
2) put your cursor in the new column
3) Choose Insert --> Function
4) Choose Text --> Lower
5) Click on the text you want to change and hit OK
6) Drag the function along the whole column/worksheet, etc.

I encourage all Ebase admininstrators to get to know functions in Excel.  I spend all my time manipulating data in Excel before importing into Ebase.  You can separate First Name Last Name into two columns, merge two columns into one, change those pesky dots into dashes for the phone numbers, and a whole host of other database field issues.
