There may be several problems here.
- It sounds like the Filemaker program is crashing, before it gets to trying
to open the data file. Try just opening Filemaker from the START button to
verify.
- When you ran SCANDISK, did it say it found errors?
- Can you open Ebase from another machine? If so, it's likely to be a
Filemaker program problem on your machine. If not, the problem is with the
data files.
- You said the data files are on a networked drive. You can't run SCANDISK
on a networked drive, only a local drive. Run SCANDISK from the machine
where the drive is physically located. Try to copy the files to another
folder first to see if there are errors. Do the THOROUGH check, not the
NORMAL
What the thorough SCANDISK check does is test every physical sector on your
hard disk. If it finds a problem spot, it tries many times to read that
spot and move the data there to another sector. It then marks that sector
as 'bad' so no other program will try to use it. Sometimes it is successful
at reading damaged sectors. Sometimes it can't, so you might be left with a
big file with some damage in the middle of it. This could cause the problem
you describe that some records in the middle of your file can't be accessed.
If you have lots of damaged sectors, or find new bad sectors every time you
run scandisk, it's a sign that your hard disk is failing and should be
replaced.

Holly
Working on PC with File Maker 5.
Over the last week ebase has shut itself down several times and gives me a
message saying that the program was not shut down properly when I pull up
the program. Other times I have no problem with it.
I just took Bob's advice and ran a scandisk. When I opened up ebase (or
tried to) all I got was an error message that the program has performed an
illegal operation and I had to shut down.
I do not know how to recover any files if I have lost them when ebase shut
itself down.
