Title: Re: [support] Salutations
I know that this has been discussed before, but I have some questions that I hope are new.  It is important for our organization to have two salutations, one formal, and one informal.  Ignoring all previous warnings, and trying to be clever, I decided to use the SALUTATION 1 box in the data entry screen as the informal and the SALUTATION 2 box as a the formal.  Then when I created a solicitation letter I merged in SALUTATION 1 in the greeting and got exactly the letter I wanted.

You probably realize this, since you mentioned the cautions, that the SALUTATION 2 field is intended to hold the salutation for the second person listed on a record. If you use this for something else, and ever put the names of two people in a single record, there is the chance of the field getting misused. Second, both salutation fields get used in calculated address fields (such as Salutation Line, which would result in a letter addressed to "Dear Dick and Jane"). If you use the calculated fields in a letter, there is the chance of getting a letter addressed to "Dear Dr. Jones and Jack"

My problem came when people responded to our letter and I started to send out thank-you letters.  The thank-you letter layout did not give me the option of merging the SALUTATION 1 field.

Not sure why you can't merge in the Salutation field. You seem to be using FileMaker, and could get to layout mode to modify the letter. Select a merge field, and you get the dialog box from which you could select a field. At that point you're in the payments file, of course, so you select the relationship Names, where you can select from all the fields in the names file, including Salutation 1 & 2.

So then I tried to define a field in the layout mode (edit: define field) that was identical to the one in defined field list for the solicitation letter layout.  Now when I print a thank-you letter it merges in a blank space, and not what appears in the SALUTATION 1 field.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Daniel Kos
