Rachel,
        I would wait as long as you can before forcing it to end its task.
The chance of data corruption is much higher if you force the it to stop.
But the chance is already there that the damage has already been done.  What
OS are you running?

                Thanks Bruce. I am able to do other things, just more slowly
than usual. I'd say it's been running for 30 minutes or more, though. We do
have a gigantic database,
                but the dupe check I had run earlier only took a few
minutes. Any thoughts on what will happen if I force quit? I'm wondering if
I will need to go to a backup, or
                if the data might be okay...
