Hi Rodney,

The trouble happens with system files. In Windows, these are often written
to other directories. When you back up only the ebase directory, you miss
any files installed in other directories. We back up only the .1xx files,
which are the actual data. Since the program files, such as ebase.exe and
others, don't change, there's no reason to copy them for daily backups.

To add ebase to another computer, perform a fresh ebase installation on that
computer, using the installer you downloaded or ran from the CD-ROM. Once
you have the new, empty copy installed on the second computer, overwrite all
the data files (all the files ending with .100 or .102 or .103, depending on
the version you're running), with your backup copies of those files. After
you do this, make sure the backup files you have just copied do not have
their read-only attribute set. I've heard this may happen to files copied
from a CD. You can check, and edit, attributes by right-clicking the file(s)
and selecting Properties.

Finally, it's not always a good idea to have a database like ebase running
independently on two computers. If you're only using the second copy as a
reference and regularly updating it with backups from the first, it may work
fine. But if you add new records to both copies, or edit them, it's possible
that they will no longer be synchronized. When that happens, you may lose
data if you overwrite either file set with the other. If you're going to
have two independent sets of data, you will need a careful plan of how to
manage them.
