There's a fine Mac shareware program called ZipIt that is great for cross platform archives. It can create self-extracting files for Mac *and PC*, so you don't need software on the PC end. ZipIt 2.1 runs natively on Mac OS 8.6, Mac OS 9.x, and Mac OS X. (If the iMac runs older than Mac OS 8.6, download the older version of ZipIt and use WinZip or pkzip at the PC end.)
http://www.maczipit.com/ WinZip can read some versions of Stuffit (.sit) archives, but the format keeps changing so I wouldn't count on that.
