Thanks for the update, Scott! I've tried it in the past, an of course
it's had its share of issues. I'll give it another try, and this time,
I'll make it a point to be a little more proactive in reporting my
results. Out of curiosity, are there any long-term side effects from
uninstalling and reinstalling these packages multiple times?

Shouldn't be any.

This is good to know. So, I have installed the Squid package, kept its configuration as minimal as possible (enabling only transparency and modifying some of the cache management attributes) and I can't get it to start.

In fact, I was just moving around in the webgui from the upstream proxy tab to the cache management tab and it totally stopped responding, both the webgui and my ability to browse the Internet. The outage lasted about 3 minutes, seemed to only affect http access (my SSH connection to a host outside of my network was unaffected), and then everything returned back to normal, although each time I visit Status > Services, Squid is reported to be in a stopped state.
