One is to connect to the line. The other is to plug a
phone into, and that is optional.
When you dial out with the modem, it will disconnect any
phone which is connected to the second jack. What that
means is that if you plug the line into the wrong one,
then you will know because it emediately hangs up when it
tries to connect. If that is the case, then change the
plugs and it will work.
For testing, you can type "echo ata > com1" and you will
hear the modem do its stuff. Type "echo ath > com1" and it
will hang up. Use whatever comport number you have your
modem on.
Hmm, it just occured to me. Are you aware of all that
comport and IRQ stuff? hehe, or did you just plug the
modem in expected it to work? If you didn't set the
comport and IRQ correctly then that may be the source of
your problems.
