Hi Patty,
  Hmm, I guess I volunteered here. <g>
I (we) will need to know a few things before we can get
into the meat of it.

  1. Internal or external modem?
  2. List of comports and IRQ assignments.

The first one you can probably answer easily. Internals
plug into the motherboard, externals plug into the back of
the computer using a cable.
The second question will require that you run some sort
of diagnostic program. Since you are so new at this, it is
probably easiest to use MSD. This is a diagnostic which
comes with MS-DOS. To run it you go the the DOS prompt
(exit windows completely) and type MSD. You will then get
a screen which has general information about your
computer. At this point you hit "c" for comports and we
can get some of what we need. Tell me which ports are
reported (COM1, COM2, etc) and the port address and UART
chip used. Ignore the rest of the information for now.

That information will get us started and we can take it
from there.
The basic concept here is to set up the hardware, (or
check that it _is_ set up correctly) before we look at the
software. There is no point in trying to set up software
if the hardware is not configured properly.

Cheers,
       Ole Juul
