You might try converting the ftp:// to http://
ie: from <ftp://somedomain.com/file.ext> to <http://somedomain.com>
to see if the site has a default home page. If so, there is usually
an Email address of someone responsible to get a hold of posted there
or perhaps a webmaster Email address at the bottom of the page.
You can do this with your browser. If it works, you will not need any
additional utilities. You may have to experiment a little with the URL,
because sometimes something is added to the beginning of the domain name
such as <ftp://download.somedomain.com/file.ext> or there may be
subdirectories under the domain name such as
<ftp://somedomain.com/~joeblow/archive/file.ext>
In the last case try <http://somedomain.com/~joeblow> or
<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> which might go directly to the owner of
the site your were downloading from ie. joeblow.
There is no penalty for getting site not found error messages. Most
webmasters use organized naming patterns for their URLs. So you can
often get to other addresses inside the ISP or directly to the ISP
itself by breaking down the file structure in the URL. If this hasn't
helped then the utilities already mentioned are definitely in order.
