PS/2 people regularly format 1.44meg floppies to 2.88megs :-)  You need the
2.88meg floppy drive to do it, Though.  The resulting floppy can't be read
by a regular 1.44meg drive either.

i have done this, and it does work.  It is reccomended that you use high
quality floppies too.
