Before handling CMOS chips, it is *recommended* to be static-free.

But a lot of chips can't really be harmed much by static.

Whenever I handle these chips I just grab hold of the computer's
chassis with it still plugged in, so its grounded through the power
point. I have never had any problems, except when I dropped a
harddrive from about a metre off the ground <G> It only had a few k
of bad sectors after that...

BTW, CMOS as in "Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor", not only
the BIOS chip inside your computer, but also RAM, chips like 4011,
74HC00 or whatever.
