I had a *very* brief stay on "PCbuild" list. Don't know why they dumped me...
anyway, there was a discussion about this, that the chips in your
components recieve microscopic damage from minor electrical shocks that
aren't noticable to the human. That damage doesn't kill the chip, but
reduces it's effectiveness and lifespan. It corrodes the pathways.
They discussed also how the strap will also protect you in case of shock,
taking the shock to ground for you.
It made a lot of sense and it seems a shame to me that people no longer
value the importance of it. Part of that toss-away mentality of modern
society, "If it's broke, get a new one."
