I'm really in the dark about exactly what these processes ( BOOTP, DHCP )
actually do - but it looks like you're absolutely right about DHCP - and
getting DOS apps that use it will become very important.
US ISPs that offer ADSL ( high speed "always on" connections over standard
copper phone wires ) use DHCP to provide a semi-dynamic IP number which will
stay valid until the ISP server goes down. ( When it comes back up, a
different IP number can be assigned...I think they do this so that no one
will set up internet servers on an ADSL line!)
It is my understanding that cable-modem ISPs also use DHCP - but I'm not
sure.
