These are the most common ways for PPP/SLIP accounts yes (I have never
heard of anyone getting a fixed IP with a modem). But with faster
connections (XDSL, ADSL, Cable) the IP is given through DHCP and/or BOOTP
(most of the times). The companys behind claim it's "easier". The truth is
that it slows down the network and that they do it for these two reasons:
1. Risk of anyone setting up a permanent server is slightly less (but
dynip.ml.org is always there, so it doesn't stop people that have been on
the Net a few years).
2. Saves IP space. They, guess, that everyone wount sit connected all the
time. But it might happen once in a while so I doub't it's very smart.

When reading a RFC (sorry, can't remember the number) on DHCP I noticed
that BOOTP should always be an option from the servers. The question is if
this is the way M$ does it (who else would even think of breaking a standard?)

My advice for you is to start digging through documentation ASAP since it
*will* be necisarely to have in the future (on the other hand it didn't
look that complicated so I bet you'll have it working after a short time).
