3.5" hole punches were quite common at one point - I used to see several
adverts for them every month in every PC magazine I read.  They aren't as
common now (the difference between 720Kb and 1.44Mb media prices is
minimal - sometimes the 720Kb are more expensive than the 1.44Mb - at
least, it is where I shop :) ) but the idea was to stick another square
hole in the lower right corner of the case (as you look at the disk, with
label toward you and slider to the top) that made the drive think it could
be formatted to 1.44Mb.

The hole punches for 5.25" disks are much better though - the disks can
cope with it...  I have a 360Kb disk upstairs, formatted to 180Kb
singlesided, that boots CP/M on one side and DOS Plus on the other.  The
neat thing about CP/M is that A: and B: are the floppy drives and C: and D:
are the other side of single-sided floppies - at least, on my machine it
is...
