Yeah, I found this to. I never thought it would make a difference,
but I recently acquired a second harddrive, and it was easier wiring
the slave on the end (just the placement of the drives), but the
computer kept stopping with "harddrive failure". swapping the drives
around worked as intended.

[This is on the 386DX, 80MB master and 40MB slave]
