It was a favourite pasttime of me and my friends to go to the shops
and ask pointless technical questions of a product and watch the
salesperson either make up an answer or get all flustered. :)

Wow, looking in the yellow pages there are tens and tens of Computer
shops here. And thats this city of 90k. There are a few 'hypermarket'
type places [eg Harvey Norman, Myers, Kmart etc] but I don't count
them either.
Most of these small shops are still operating, some have even moved
to bigger and better premises.
