You've helped out plenty already!

That's what I thought. I reasoned that, if nobody said anything about a
problem with COM port connections, there should be very few problems with
them. I took apart my computer today and noticed that this second 25-pin
COM port is connected directly to the motherboard (if I recall correctly;
I've got it all put together again) with a small ribbon and connector. I
couldn't detect any problem with how it was seated there. My system clearly
shows that I have *two* serial ports, when I check it with Qconfig under PC
DOS.

You may be right. But after some thought on the matter, I decided that the
much faster parallel port connection would be worth the inconvenience for
larger file transfer projects (that wouldn't be that frequent with my work
anyway -- but nice to have when needed); right now I'm in the process of
transferring most of my archives and programs (largely freeware) to the
notebook computer from my 486, and I also may need a Zipdrive some time down
the road, so the decision for exchanging my much weaker serial setup for a
parallel one has won out. (I got $7.00 back after the exchange, too. <g>)
After trying out the parallel cable, the result was an instant success --
and the transfer speed is very satisfying. It looks like the $8.99 parallel
cable option is going to be the best compromise after all. <g> And I can
use PC DOS's File Transfer Utility nicely over this connection, too...
Nonetheless, I'm archiving your e-mail message here and those of the others,
too, for future reference. If I need to use that extra serial port someday,
I'll need such information to troubleshoot what's wrong.
Thank you very much for your patience and effort!
