It's difficult to read emotions from typed words -- more so for some than

Thank you, just the same. I wouldn't be surprised that, if I asked IBM
about the problem, they'd just tell me to use a parallel connection, too!

It's a pain to return things, also -- but I think I'll keep the serial cable
and connector in case I can use them elsewhere another day. It's not
that great of a loss.
Unless someone comes up with any further ideas/suggestions, I'll just use
the File Update Utility with PC DOS and some floppies for file transfers.
