Hi Carl,

Getting Trumpet Winsock to work can be a pain, but the results are worth it.
I used the Trumpet/Opera/Win 3.1 combo successfully many years ago on my old
386 before cannibalizing it.

My advice to you is to open up the Trumpet configuration menu, get your
friendly ISP support person on the phone, and ask them for the exact values
you need. (The key is to start out telling them you need help configuring
your dialer.) If they refuse to provide you with this info I would
seriously look for another ISP.

Another thing you should do is activate Trumpet first (and make sure you're
past the logging in stage) before opening up Opera. Yeah, it's one more
step to take, but it can make a big difference.

Actually, it sounds like you have everything working pretty well if you can
get as far as the log in stage (this is the same as when Aiyee! says
"verifying username and password"). This means you probably don't have to
worry about your modem settings. Perhaps Trumpet is getting stuck on your
password--try doing a manual or scripted log in. There's a file called
login.cmd that is supposed to have your correct username and password.
Check it out, and make sure that your password isn't incorrectly entered in
all caps or something like that.

Besides checking out the support pages at Opera.com or Trumpet.com, here's a
good source of help for Opera users (warning, blatant self-promo ahead--did
you think I was going to write all this for free?!):

Subject: [SURVPC] Opera Browser Help Needed

Is anyone on the list using the Opera browser for connecting to a
ppp Internet provider?
...
I'd like to give the 16-bit Opera browser V. 3.60
(www.operasoftware.com) a test drive with Win 3.1 and Trumpet
Winsock V. 2.1f--before the free trial period for each of them
expires.
...
I have unzipped Trumpet (twsk21f.zip) in a directory named
Trumpwsk, created a windows group named Network, brought into the
Network group all the Trumpet .exe files, and added a
path=c:\trumpwsk in the autoexec.bat file. The Opera browser is
loaded in a directory named Opera, and its Windows icon is in the
Applications group.

When I load Opera and type in a www address, Trumpet's TCPMan
loads and opens a small window which says "initializing modem,"
then "dialing (the IP's phone number)," then "connected. Now
logging in as (my user ID)."

It sits there like that for a minute or two. Then the small
window says "disconnecting modem," following which a bit bit
bigger window appears, which says "! Network Problem."
